The tragic death of an 11-year old Haitian girl, a student at an expensive private school in Santiago, has become a Pandora Box. The mother of the child, Loveli Raphael Joseph, took her case to the media after she could not get a straight story straight on what happened leading to the drowning of her daughter during a school outing of the Instituto de Desarrollo Integral Leonardo Da Vinci from the school nor from the justice department authorities in Santiago. The media reported and the headlines followed.

The mother was then received by Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso in Santo Domingo, and Vice President Raquel Pena, who is from Santiago, motivated the authorities to find out what was not being told.

TV journalist Nuria Piera says that this is not the first time the Da Vinci private school authorities act with overzealousness, seemingly to protect...

The murder of Yennely Duarte in the village of Quitasueño in Santiago was a horrific crime. The Department of Justice sent their big gun to prosecute the case, Toribio Antonio Gomez. The crime, committed in March of 2024, came to trial with the typical delays and courtroom incidents, but on 1 December 2025, the trial ended, and prosecutor Gomez had achieved yet another exemplary sentence: 30 years in prison for Ammy Hiraldo Peña.

This is considered to be yet another win for Gomez, and his past performance indicates he is very good at his job. It seems that if the Justice Department has a major case regarding rape, incest, assault that results in the death of the victim, homicide, or drugs, Gomez is going to be the prosecutor.

His successes in gaining convictions is, indeed, impressive. El Caribe newspaper publishes a list of ten convictions carrying sentences from...

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Dominican Republic swine population suffered from an outbreak of the African Swine Fever, a debilitating disease that kills hogs. Back during the administration of President Antonio Guzman (1978-1982), the outbreak was so severe that the government dictated the elimination of the entire porcine population of the Dominican Republic. However, despite intense government efforts, hogs were hidden, and some survived, but most of the pork today consumed in the DR is imported from the United States.

Eventually, the Swine Fever epidemic was controlled, and the repopulation of the pig population with imported hogs was a success.

Since that time, there have been localized outbreaks, generally speaking, in small operations, and the government has been successful in controlling the spread of the disease. The issue is explained as there are no...

Anibal de Castro, executive editor of Diario Libre, analyzed the recent speech given by US Ambassador Leah Francis Campos to the audience of the American Chamber of Commerce and characterized it as a public redefinition of Washington’s policy toward the Dominican Republic under the new Trump administration.
